When the Zombie Apocalypse comes, we are ready, ha, ha, ha!

Back of my Jeep, packed and ready for any eventuality!  

So, it is Sunday the 23rd of August, and we had just come back from a little shopping trip in San Clemente in my Jeep Wrangler, and when I came home, I realized that the Jeep was filled with pretty much all the essentials that we need when the Zombie Apocalypse happens!  (By the way, when it comes to four-wheeling, I’m a pathetic poser; the biggest obstacles I traverse are the speedbumps in my neighborhood, and it has been years since I put the Jeep in four-wheel-drive mode, but should the need arise, I am ready!)  At first glance it was such a miss-match of stuff, but then it dawned on me that not only did it pretty much describe me and my likes, it was also stuff that is essential for the good life, especially in San Clemente!  So, as I opened up the back, I saw the following:

  • ·       Two beach chairs
  • ·       Beach blanket
  • ·       Beach umbrella
  • ·       A 12” x 16” frame for some of Kathy’s cool artwork (which I think can be traded for ammunition, should the need arise)
  • ·       Three boxes of LEGOs (essential!)
  • ·       Six months supply of Flomax for my prostate
  • ·       Offroad stuff (should I ever go offroad, which is unlikely)
  • ·       A really cool backpack
  • ·       A 16 oz bottle of water (yup, we are ready for any eventuality)
  • ·       A paper bag
  • ·       A book bag, filled with books from our favorite library in San Clemente
  • ·       My drum hardware bag, filled with “somewhat” lightweight drum hardware
  • ·       Assorted towels
  • ·       A nice and thick blanket which should keep us warm, should we ever need to sleep under the stars…   

Now, I don’t want to downplay the importance of being ready and prepared for disaster (especially in Southern California, where we are living with the constant threat of “The Big One”, a catastrophic earthquake which of course could happen at any moment, and split the state in two), and having plenty of essentials on hand, but in So Cal we are usually a laidback crowd, and enjoying life to its fullest every day is on top of our list!  Maybe that’s why the survivalists seem to be living in states with bad weather and plenty of wild animals; I guess if the wolf and the bear are literally at the door, you gotta be ready!

Even so, we are not totally unprepared; we have a couple of days’ worth of canned foods, a 24-pack of bottled water, plenty of books and un-built LEGOs, so we are pretty set when the Zombies try to take over!  And, as you can see below, the Jeep is already packed and ready to go, should we need to head to the hills! 

Yee Haw, here we come So Cal style! 

 

A paper bag, a couple of beach chairs and a beach umbrella, and we are ready, no matter what happens!   

 

 

A book bag, filled with some new non-fiction releases for me, and disaster-at-sea books for Kathy (her latest fascination).

 

 

A really cool backpack, filled with the bag that holds the Jeep’s Freedom Panels (which is a fancy name for the removable Jeep roof panels).  I love this backpack; this was swag from my old employer Edwards Lifesciences, and the backpack could be customized with panels from just about any color, so mine is pretty much rainbow colored! 

 

 

Three boxes of LEGOs, bought on sale at our local Target.  This will keep me occupied for hours!    

 

 

A 180-day supply of Flomax for my prostate, part of my daily medications (six different meds in total so far, but who knows what the future holds…).  If by chance you are interested in “Ye Old Prostate”, you can check out my blogpost “The Prostate Saga…”. 

 

 

My drum hardware bag, which pretty much lives in the back of my Jeep.  Not the lightest of hardware, but at least I can get it out of the Jeep by myself (as opposed to my trap case, which takes two people to get of the truck).  I can stuff my little four-piece Premier kit in the back of the Jeep, for quiet gigs.  I’m ready! 

 

 

My offroad / survival bag, which also lives in the back of the Jeep.  Got a shovel, some tools, a first-aid kit, a tow strap, and some jumper cables.  Hopefully I will never need any of it, but just in case…  I also have a thick blanked in the back, which could come in handy when the Zombies are running wild…    

 

 

A 16 oz bottle of water, gotta be ready, ha, ha, ha! 

 

 

Several old towels, which can be useful for all kinds of things; drying off (well, that’s pretty obvious), wrapping up valuables, mopping up spills, and (God forbid), if we are ever in a car wreck, stopping blood flow… 

So, let’s hope for the best, and that we don’t ever have to leave our house in the middle of the night to take shelter in the hills, but as you can see, should it happen, at least we have the essentials; books and LEGOs!  Instead, let’s hope that tomorrow is another beautiful beach day, and that Mother Nature is on her best behavior, and that the Zombies are staying put in their final resting places!

Lars’ Latest Health Issue: But this time it is different!

Keeping Mentally Sharp at 70 and Beyond; Part Two: Fix, Make and Build Things!

  As I now enter into my seventies, I’m well aware that for me and my contemporaries, there will be some “normal” age-related cognitive decline; I myself experience situations where I can’t think of the right word, can’t remember somebody’s name, or I lose stuff that I seemingly had right in front of my eyes just a few seconds ago.   All of this is annoying to say the least, but I’m thinking that maybe we can slow this “normal” state of affairs a little bit, maybe with some new ways of thinking, and maybe doing!   Caveat; I’m not a neuroscientist, I’m not an MD, I’m not a psychologist or psychiatrist, I’m just a guy that’s been alive on the planet for seventy years, and I’m hoping to be on this side of the grass for as long as possible! Working for a living Part One: Stockholm, summer 1969 through early spring 1981

  My Presam work ID card, circa 1980.  I had combed my hair as a rocker as a silly joke.   As I’m writing this, I’ve been employed full-time since  the spring of 1976, so it seems I’ve been working continuously for almost 50 years, earning a paycheck!  Not bad, and the rewards have been plenty; food, rent money, mortgage money, buying stuff (cars, pickup trucks, drums, houses, horses, education, vacations, etc.), and making sure that my family was fed and had a roof over their heads.  I like working, and I’m still at it, and I’ll keep it up as long as anybody is willing to pay me for what I do, whatever that is!  A little note about my employment history back in Sweden; back then (1970-1980) it was customary to issue a final written performance review, and for some reason, I saved them all, with the exception of my first job.  So, even though I had forgotten the dates, when I found the records (you will see them below), the dates became accur...
